We are excited to announce that Changing Places UK have today revealed a list of Local Authorities which have been successful in their application for Changing Places Toilet funding.
So far across England, £23.5 million funding has been allocated to 191 councils which will be invested into the installation of more than 510 new Changing Places Toilets. The Toilets are to be installed within a number of public places and tourist attractions across the country. As part of the Spring Statement, Chancellor Rishi Sunak has advised that this investment is set to be followed by a second funding application round, with an expected £6.5 million additional funding to come.
Changing Place are specialist facilities designed for those within the disabled community who cannot use standard accessible toilets. For example, standard accessible WCs are designed for access by a standard wheelchair, but they are unlikely to provide adequate space for a powered wheelchair, or a wheelchair with additional head or leg support fittings. Standard accessible WC’s are also only designed for independent use by the individual and there is usually insufficient room to accommodate a carer /carers if the user requires assistance.
Changing Places are expertly designed to provide additional space, with in-built specialist equipment aiding safe and hygienic washing, toileting and changing. The Government funding will make a life-changing difference for the lives of the disabled community across England; opening up venues and locations that many people previously have been unable to access and enjoy.
Eddie Hughes, Ministerial Disability Champion, said:
“It goes without saying that people with severe disabilities, their families and carers should be able to go shopping, plan a day out or travel without needing to worry about whether they will have access to suitable toilet facilities. I am delighted that our funding today will help provide over 500 new Changing Places Toilets in England, enabling people to enjoy everything their local area has to offer with dignity and freedom.”
At Kingkraft, we feel it is important that everyone is supported in their right to have access to safe and comfortable facilities.
