Assistive Technologies - RAATE 2007 Event

Kingkraft will be attending the RAATE Event (Recent Advances in Assistive Technology & Engineering) on 26th and 27th November 2007, which is to be held at the Cutler’s Hall in Sheffield.

RAATE is the only UK conference focused on the latest innovations in Assistive Technology and is organised by IPEM (The institute of Physics Engineering and Medicine). The conference attracts delegates from across the UK who uses, works with, develops or conducts research on Assistive Technology. The conference has, over the years, regularly included new technological developments, service innovations, results of formal research projects, service-based research and development and other stimulating topics.

This year RAATE is collaborating with the £1.9m Advanced Care Technologies (ACT) Programme in South Yorkshire. The region has one of the largest clusters of medical device companies in the UK, with 8% of healthcare technology manufacturers based here. However, the region’s businesses still lag behind the rest of Europe in terms of R&D investment which continues to impede its economic renewal. To ensure that the million pound Advanced Care Technologies Programme, collaboration between researchers in the University of Sheffield, Barnsley Foundation Hospital and 11 partner organisations. ACT will work with industry and care providers to develop new and improved products and systems that support people with mobility or activity limitations.

This exciting collaboration means a change of venue, to the Cutler’s Hall in Sheffield, and the opportunity to bring together new components of the Assistive Technology world. For the first time this year, the four zoned RAATE conference exhibition will be opened to the general public on the morning of 27 November 2007. The concept for the RAATE 2007 exhibition is modeled upon the successful ‘Hot Metal, Cool Future’ event held at the Hallam FM Arena in Nov 2005 that brought together the engineering and manufacturing companies, Special Metals Forum and the Army Careers Service to raise awareness of the career pathways for 16-25 year olds within the engineering and manufacturing sector across South Yorkshire. Having looked at the wider challenges within Assistive Technology and Telecare sector across the region and building upon the success of the ‘Hot Metal, Cool Future’ event the four zoned RAATE exhibition is designed to bring together the region’s manufacturers, suppliers, care professionals, sector skills and workforce development delivery organisations to engage with ATT end-users.

The RAATE conference over two days has paper presentations and posters from key AT practitioners and researchers, pertinent and influential keynote speakers, an exhibition and trade presentations. Building on the success of last year’s training programme is in two parts - a training programme for the first part of Day 1, followed by the start of the main conference to continue into Day 2. This year’s topics will include Posture, AT Research and access to Technology. These training courses are aimed at AT practitioners or researchers wishing to expand their knowledge of AT.
